Why Install Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is designed to ‘kick in’ when an emergency situation occurs and the main power supply is cut, resulting in the loss of any normal lighting and mains electrical supply.

The loss of mains electricity could be the result of a fire meaning the normal lighting supply fails. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 deems any person in charge of non-domestic premises and the common areas of a House in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) with the safety of everyone in the building including visitors or those living there.

As a result, emergency routes and exits that require illumination must have adequate emergency lighting in case of emergency like a fire and the loss of normal lighting occurs.

Oz Tech's emergency lighting provides an excellent range of emergency lighting solutions for both commercial and residential properties that legally require emergency lighting. All our emergency lighting solutions are in line with current legislation and conform to British Standard 5266.

Maintenance of Emergency Lighting

We’re able to provide comprehensive emergency lighting maintenance packages that will keep your emergency lighting in good working order. We recommend a maintenance package as emergency lighting needs regular testing to make sure its fit for purpose which include the following tests:

  • A daily visual check of all lighting and switch equipment (we can train you how to do this);

  • A monthly function test by operating the test facility for a period sufficient to ensure that each emergency lamp illuminates

  • An annual full discharge test

The daily check can be conducted without a Oz Tech technician present, but for real piece of mind, our monthly maintenance package will cover everything you need to make sure your emergency lighting will work exactly when you need it.

Purpose of emergency lighting

Emergency and exit lighting is an essential fire safety measure to keep your property and people safe by ensuring a safe egress when the normal lighting fails, such as during a fire or other crisis.

  • To show clearly the escape routes and signage

  • Allow safe movement without stumbling

  • Help prevent panic

  • Show & identify fire equipment (e.g. extinguishers)

  • Permit safety operations such as locating and checking the fire control panel indications

Emergency and exit lighting must be tested, inspected and maintained in accordance with the AS 2293.2 to be completed 6 monthly. The test consists of a 90min duration test that simulates mains failure and confirms lights operation.

As a licenced electrical contractor, Oz Tech designs, installs and maintains Emergency and Exit Lighting systems.
